It is not uncommon to walk up and talk to one of the world's most famous athletes during the competitions. Many visitors and competitors eventually become residents and move into their own new homes. Oahu can have that inviting effect on people.
Lifeguards are on duty during the hours of 8:00am to 5:00pm. Obey all posted warning signs, the lifeguards know what they are doing and are among the best in the world. But even so, bathers should use common sense in judging their skill level in the waters. Year after year, Sandy beach has the most injuries of all the beaches in Hawaii. This is not a coincidence. Only the most experienced should stay in the water if the swells get to four foot and higher.
Had enough of the surf? Sandy beach has one of the highest ratings for sunbathing in all the Hawaiian Islands. It's great to absorb solar energy and let it relax you. Sandy is a wonderful place to people watch. The levels of ultraviolet rays from the sun are high here. It is said that people will be burned in a half hour of exposure to their bare skin so don't skimp on the sun block. An ounce of prevention will keep them from getting scorched. There are no restaurants in the vicinity; beachgoers should bring some lunch if they want to eat. Or they can stop somewhere on the way back to their new homes.
